What AFE looks at

Crypto activity takes many forms, and each one can be treated differently for tax. AFE works through your history one activity at a time.

  • Spot trading: each sale, swap and spend in your history, and the cost of what you disposed of.
  • Staking: the rewards you receive, when you receive them and what happens when you later sell them.
  • Airdrops: why you received the tokens and whether you did anything in return.
  • Mining: whether your activity looks like a hobby or a business, and how rewards and costs are recorded.
  • NFTs: whether you create, buy or sell them, with the cost and proceeds of each one.
  • DeFi: lending, liquidity pools and yield, looking at what each transaction does in substance.
  • Exchange and wallet records: your exports and wallet addresses, joined into one transaction history.
  • Businesses paid in crypto: how crypto received for goods or services is valued and recorded in your accounts.

HMRC sets out its approach in the Cryptoassets Manual. How it applies to you depends on the facts, and AFE reviews them with you.

Two routes: individuals and businesses

If you invest or trade personally, crypto tax reporting covers working out your gains and income and reporting them to HMRC.

If you run a blockchain or Web3 business, business accounting covers bookkeeping, accounts and company tax. VAT questions sit with tax and VAT.

Questions about crypto tax.

How does HMRC treat cryptocurrency?

HMRC does not treat cryptoassets as money. For most individuals, selling, swapping or spending crypto can give rise to Capital Gains Tax [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM].

Some receipts, such as staking or mining rewards, may be treated as income instead [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Businesses that hold or receive crypto deal with it through their accounts and company tax. HMRC explains its view in the Cryptoassets Manual.

What records do I need?

You need a record of every transaction. That usually means the date, the type, the tokens and amounts, and their value in pounds at the time [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM].

Exchange exports, wallet addresses and bank statements are the starting point. If an exchange has closed or your records have gaps, tell AFE early so the team can look at what can be rebuilt.

Is staking taxed differently from trading?

Often, yes. Staking rewards may be treated as income when you receive them [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Selling or swapping tokens is usually a disposal for Capital Gains Tax [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM].

A reward you later sell can then be relevant twice, once as income and once on disposal [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. The treatment depends on how the staking works and the facts, so AFE reviews each arrangement.

What if I have unreported gains from earlier years?

HMRC has routes for telling it about unpaid tax on cryptoassets [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Dealing with it before HMRC contacts you is generally viewed more favourably [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM].

AFE can review your history, work out what may be owed and explain the options. Each case depends on its facts.

Who leads crypto work at AFE?

Adam Feyzi FCCA leads crypto and blockchain work personally. Adam is the founder and director of AFE Accountants and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He reviews how your activity should be treated and the figures that go to HMRC. You can read more about his background on his profile page before you book a consultation.

Yes. Even if you have only bought and held, it is worth keeping good records from the start. Rewards, airdrops or swaps between tokens may still need to be looked at, depending on what happened. AFE can review your history and explain whether anything needs reporting, so you know where you stand before you sell.

Do you work with crypto clients outside London?

How are fees agreed for crypto work?

Fees are agreed before work starts, so you know the cost in advance. The current fees model is [FEES MODEL: confirm with Adam]. Crypto work varies a lot, because the number of transactions, wallets and exchanges affects the time involved. The first consultation is free, and the team explains the fee once it understands your history.
