Questions creators ask us.
Do I pay tax on gifted products?
Sometimes. A gift can count as income when you receive it in return for content, a post or a mention. A product sent with no expectation of anything in return may be treated differently [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM].
The answer depends on what was agreed with the brand. AFE looks at your agreements, messages and records, then explains how each item should be treated.
When do I need to register for VAT as a creator?
You must register once your taxable turnover goes over the VAT registration threshold in a rolling twelve-month period [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. HMRC sets the threshold and it can change.
Where your income comes from also matters. Payouts from overseas platforms and fees from UK brands can be treated differently for VAT. AFE reviews your income and explains the position on the VAT and business structure service.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profit, whether you need all of it to live on, and how much paperwork you are happy with. A company is a separate legal entity with its own filings and duties.
AFE compares both options using your own figures before you decide. The guide on sole trader or limited company explains the main differences.
How is income from overseas platforms taxed?
If you are UK resident, your worldwide income is usually taxable in the UK, including payouts from platforms based abroad [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Some platforms deduct tax before paying you.
Whether you can offset tax taken abroad depends on the country, the forms you have filed and the facts [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Tony Riezzo has a background in cross-border residency, which helps where you live or work abroad for part of the year.
What can I claim as expenses?
You can usually claim costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your creator business [VERIFY WITH HMRC / ADAM]. Examples might include cameras, lighting, editing software and props used only for content.
Items you also use personally, such as a phone or a room at home, may need to be split between business and private use. AFE reviews your costs and keeps a clear record of what was claimed and why.
Can you work with my agent or management company?
Yes, with your permission. Agents and managers often hold the contracts, invoices and payment statements AFE needs. [CONFIRM: how AFE works with agents and management companies]
Tony Riezzo has a background in TV, media and talent clients, so this way of working is familiar to the team.

Frequently asked questions
Do you only work with creators in London?
No. AFE Accountants works with creators across the UK and is remote-first, so most of the work happens by phone, video call and email. Clients can also be seen in North London if they prefer to meet in person. Where you are based does not change the service, and your records can be shared online with the team.
Is the first consultation free?
Yes. The first consultation with AFE is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is a chance to explain how you earn, what you have filed before and what worries you. The team then explains how it could help and how fees are agreed, so you can decide in your own time.
How are your fees agreed for creators?
Fees are agreed before any work starts, so you know the cost in advance. The current fees model is [FEES MODEL: confirm with Adam]. The amount depends on how many income streams you have, the state of your records and whether you need VAT or company work. The first consultation is free, and the team explains the fee before you commit.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Bring a rough picture of how you earn. A list of platforms, brand partners and agents is a good start, along with any recent tax returns or letters from HMRC. Bank statements and payout reports help later, but you do not need them to book. The team will tell you exactly what it needs after the call.
